Jeppesen Italy office in Massa pulls together to raise funds for flood victims hit by “freshwater tsunami”

This past fall, sudden and severe flooding caused by heavy rains created complete devastation in areas of Northern Italy, causing the tragic death of seven people, numerous injuries, and incredible property damage caused by a wall of water and mud. And even though many employees of Jeppesen’s Massa, Italy offices were themselves among the victims of this natural disaster, they launched a fundraising campaign to support their community so impacted by this tragedy.

Making it even more terrifying, this flood came in the dark of night, as over a few hours about 70mm (2.35 inches) rain fell on the provinces of Massa Carrara and La Spezia, with nearly 100mm (3.9 inches) of rain falling in the mountainous regions above. The result was a torrent of water and mud that buried streets, flooded homes and businesses, and piled cars on top of one another like driftwood. With its suddenness and severity, some reports described the rising waters as a “tsunami.”

Dopo I fanghi…saremo ancora più belli.”

Although Jeppesen’s facilities were spared damage, the tragedy affected some of the Jeppesen family. To raise funds for recovery efforts, the team helped sell special t-shirts printed with an Italian phrase that Jeppesen hopes will not only raise money, but also the spirits of communities touched by this tragedy. Emblazoned across the front of shirt is “Dopo I fanghi…saremo ancora più belli,” which loosely translates in English to “After the mud, we will look better,” a clever nod to the rejuvenating power of spa-style mud treatments.

We applaud the spirit of our Massa team, along with their efforts to make something positive out of this situation by helping friends and neighbors in need.

Residents awoke to flooded streets, homes and businesses.
