On the heels of successful live CONNECT events in Dubai, UAE, and Seoul, South Korea, I wanted to use this opportunity in the second issue of Jeppesen’s CONNECT newsletter to share a key theme that energized the events – Big Data.
Data analytics examines large amounts of data to uncover hidden patterns, correlations and other insights. Analyzing data to get the best out of your business is nothing new. People have been counting items, punching cards, and manually tabulating data for years. Most organizations now understand that if they capture all the data that streams into their businesses, they can apply analytics and get significant value from it. With analytics, a pilot can plan the most fuel-efficient route, a mechanic can recognize and understand how to fix a problem before the aircraft even arrives, and an executive can decide which airplane is best for operations.
In the past, data analysis would take significant time and energy and was used to help drive decisions for operating smarter in the future – years in the future. Today, because data is at our fingertips and analysis takes just seconds, we can course correct and adjust immediately. The ability to work faster – and stay agile – gives organizations a competitive edge they didn’t have before.
The aviation industry already collects a huge amount of data, but it’s often siloed in different areas of operations – the cockpit, the hangar, the operations center. Unifying that data is the industry’s next big hurdle to overcome.
In this issue, we’ll highlight ways that we at Boeing are knocking down those silos to help the industry reduce cockpit workload, create better situational awareness for pilots, and set the foundation upon which future innovation will become attainable. The key is optimizing the clarity around the short- and long-term impact of any situation. That’s the journey we’re on together—creating new levels of collaboration, mining new efficiencies, integrating data streams, applying world-class algorithms to analyze data, and more.
By working together, we put the industry’s premier decision-making power in your hands.
